How to reach Kolhapur

Kolhapur is located in south-west side of Maharashtra State on the bank of Panchaganga river and well connected by road, train and airport. Below is travel guide to Kolhapur City.

Kolhapur By Train:

Kolhapur has a  railway station with “Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj Terminus” name. There are many expresses  which come and leave from this railway station to Mumbai, Bengaluru and New Delhi.

Kolhapur By Road:

Kolhapur is well connected by Mumbai-Bengaluru highway (NH-4). Kolhapur has Central Bus Stand (CBS) where State Transport (ST) buses are coming and leaving to various cities of Maharashtra including Mumbai, Pune and Bengaluru.

Both, ST stand and railway station are situated in the heart of Kolhapur City and are walking distance of 10-15 minutes from each other. You will be getting auto-rickshaw from both the places till 12 pm in the mid-night and also in the early morning. 

Kolhapur By Air:

Kolhapur also has airport named “Chhatrapati Rajaram Maharaj Airport” which is bit outskirts from the main city (10 km from Kolhapur City). Kolhapur Airport is operational now. There are some daily flights recently started to Mumbai, Bengaluru and Tirupati Balaji but those are not many and it’s better to not rely of them as of today unless you want to take flight travelling experience. 

In future, I am sure there will be regular flights from Kolhapur airport which will bring growth to local business.

How to reach Kolhapur from Mumbai :  

Kolhapur is 395 km from Mumbai. Generally If I tend to travel from Mumbai to Kolhapur then I prefer traveling in the night to save time. Mostly I prefer Mahalaxmi express (Train No. 17411) which leave from Dadar (at 8.33 pm) and Thane (at 9 pm) and reach to Kolhapur station at 7.20 am in morning. It’s a sleeper coach train so your journey becomes very convenient.

If you don’t get train reservation then Sleeper travel bus is also a convenient option which starts from various places of Mumbai (Dadar/Pune/Vashi) in the night and reach Kolhapur in early morning (around 4-5 am). From there you can take local Auto-rickshaws to reach your desired place.

How to reach Kolhapur from Pune:  

Kolhapur is 225 km from Pune. Journey by train for Pune people will take little longer than by-road route. I generally prefer ST bus option which require 5 hours of travelling from Pune to Kolhapur. From Swarget station there is good frequency of ST bus to Kolhapur and you will find buses to Kolhapur in every half an  hour.

Also, for IT people ST department have started buses directly from Hinjewadi to Kolhapur. These buses leave from Hinjewadi Phase-3 office at around 4 to 5 pm on every Friday and reach Kolhapur at 10 to 10.30 pm. Same buses start on Monday early morning from Kolhapur and reach to Hinjewadi by 10 to 10.30 am so people can go to the office directly. Many people from Kolhapur who are working in Pune IT field, do prefer this convenient option.

Traveling within Kolhapur City :

Auto-rickshaws are the most common and economical mode of transport for local transport within City. Also, tourists can also catch local buses run by the Kolhapur municipal corporation (KMC) but you need to know exact places and Bus number. Taxis are available but not that common. Recently OLA has started their service in Kolhapur but it’s not yet popular though.

If you are going by Auto­-rickshaw then ask driver to take you by meter rather than lump sum amount as this will help you to pay only correct fare as per distance traveled.
