Job Interview Tips That Will Help You Get Hired

When you’re attending any interview, you’re competing against hundreds of other job hunters who are out to beat you and steal away your job opportunity. Knowing this means you need to be better than everyone else, and to be better, you need to understand your weaknesses and strengths. Below tips will help you to prepare for an interview and by following these tips your chance of getting selected will surely going to increase.

On this page, you’ll find job interview tips which I divided in 3 sections.
  • Tips which are very common. You can easily found those on Google search.
  • Tips which are very unique but practical. You will rarely found those listed anywhere else.
  • Special Tips for fresher’s going to attend interview.

Section-1:

Here are some very common tips. You will find these easily even if you search on Google.

  • Read about Company and their Business/Profile for which you are going to attend interview
  • Be ready for most commonly asked interview question like
    • Tell me about yourself ?” – Start from your current job and then go back. Keep it simple for 2-3 minutes only.
  • Never mention false information in resume that can lead to legal issues
  • Speak and behave in confident manner without hesitation but do take necessary time to think before answering any question. Don’t be anxious or over confident.
  • Dress well – “The first impression is the last impression” – Formal dressing is always best and reliable
  • Reach before 10-15 mins earlier that requested so as keep some buffer and have some relaxing time for you which will avoid your last minute anxiety
  • Have some Questions Ready to ask interviewer if s/he insist you after interview is done. Some examples are like:
    • What’s a typical day in this role?
    • Who does this job report to?
    • What are the key functions and responsibilities?
  • End the interview by Thanking the Interviewer

Section-2:

Now, here are some tips which you will rarely find anywhere else but are most crucial and practical:

  • Never ask interviewer an question like “Will job require me to stretch beyond working hours?” Or “Do I need to work on weekends as well”
  • Always keep :
    • extra hard copy of your resume
    • “Working” Pen
    • and 1-2 passport Photo with you
  • Keep your phone on Silent during interview- Do NOT keep it on vibrate mode as it will distract your mind if it rings during interview even if you can disconnect it later
  • Never Bad-mouth your previous employer even though you might have some bad experience with them
  • Keep your linked-in profile updated before attempting interview. HR might scan through it.
  • Maintain a positive attitude throughout the conversation. For example, when the interviewer asks for the reason that you are quitting your present job, do not say something like “There are too many office politics” or “the compensation is not good enough for my talent.” Keep it on the positive side by saying something like, “I have read plenty about your company and would cherish the challenging opportunities that lie ahead.”
  • Listen to every word the interviewer has to say. Your answer must be in line with what interviewers ask of you.
  • Do NOT interrupt when Interviewer is speaking. Keep quiet until the interviewer expects you to talk.
  • Be at the interview facility on time. But Don’t arrive too early (as it might indicate how unoccupied you are) but being late is definitely out of the question.
  • At the end of the interview you must be inquisitive enough to ask about the next steps following the interview. You can ask something like, “So, can I expect that HR will get in touch with me for subsequent actions?” By saying this, you are being positive that your interview has gone in the right direction and you are looking forward to what lies ahead

Section-3:

Finally here are some tips especially for fresher’s who are going to attend interview:

  • Spend enough time to create your resume. Take help of some seniors if required.
  • Don’t make your resume lengthier. Max 1-2 pages are sufficient for the fresher level.
  • Don’t ask for or initiate discussion on Salary expectation immediately. Delay the Salary discussion until Interviewer or HR ask you from their end.
  • Update your social sites with your latest certifications  and achievements etc. before going for interview.
  • Do practice for an interview. You can practice in front of mirror or in closed room. You can also ask friend to be act as an interviewer to conduct Mock interviews.
  • Reach 10 mins before interview so you can get prepared and refresh.
  • Have balanced diet before going for an interview. Specifically for boys- don’t go with your hangover mode ON to attempt an interview.
  • Keep a watch on your language while answering questions. It’s common that you may use friendly or informal words which is OK in college but not during an interview.
  • Avoid speaking Hindi words in between like hmm, haa etc.
  • If you don’t know the answer then say “you don’t know”. It’s OK to say No upfront rather than throwing some irrelevant answer and confusing interviewer further.
