You can either go by local auto or City bus. Best option is local auto though. We went there early morning and reached at main gate by auto around 10.30 am.
This place has mainly three things or parts to Visit, first is Palace itself, second is Museum inside Palace and finally Zoo along with Garden outside the Palace.
New Palace
New palace is an ancient building which was constructed during 1877-1884. It has wide premises with a lovely park, fountain and wresting ground. The whole building is eight-angled and has a tower in the middle. At separate distance there are small towers. On every glass are painted the events in Shivaji’s life. Even today, Shreemant Shahu Maharaj families are living here.
During our visit we found that many people have written their names on historical walls & wooden carvings. Palace management should work on visitor's behavior inside palace to avoid damage to such a beautiful and historical place.
Museum
Museum is Located on the ground floor of the palace. The museum provides a sight into the life of the royals of Kolhapur through its Photo display. It also has jewellery, attire, weapons used by Kings, paintings.New Palace, Kolhapur Large Hall |
You can find this huge and royal hall as a part of museum inside palace. It looks great and we can imagine the place when it was full functional at that time in the history.
Also, they have satiated animals like tiger, deer, etc. which kids will definitely enjoy. Along with the Photo Gallery, there is Darbar Hall with lobed curves, carved columns and a raised throne which displays brilliance and power of great warriors.
Zoo and Garden
There is zoo and a ground lake opposite to the Palace. The lawn is lush green, people can sit, relax and can take as many pictures as they want.We found this placed in the garden which was used in wars and still in good condition.
We also found beautiful model of various forts created in the Palace garden which was looking amazing and real as you can see below.
